The Right Bed Makes a Difference: Tony’s Story

A Story Worth Sharing

Tony is 28 years old, a professional diver who suffered an anoxic brain injury while working in the shipyard. The accident resulted in profound disability, including significant spasticity and functional loss in the movement and strength of his legs and arms. After intensive rehabilitation, Tony returned to live with his mother and extended family, who became his primary caregivers.

Tony’s original bed was a standard semi-electric institutional hospital bed — single-size, standard mattress, no extended length, metal side rails, and a plastic head and foot board. The head and foot of the bed raised and lowered, but the height of the bed itself did not change.

The problems became apparent quickly. Because the bed height was fixed, transferring Tony from bed to standing was very difficult. At 6’2”, Tony’s feet regularly ended up between the mattress and the footboard, creating pressure on his skin and increasing the risk of skin breakdown. The bed was simply too small for him. And as Tony’s family adapted to this new chapter of their lives together, they found that the institutional bed created an unexpected emotional distance — his 5-year-old son could not easily climb in and cuddle with his father, and family members felt constrained by the clinical setup around him.

A Better Solution

With the help of Adaptive Specialties, Tony’s family selected a full-powered Queen-size home hospital bed in an extended length, with full head and foot articulation and hi-low height adjustment. With careful measurement and coordination, they also found a compatible sleigh bed-style headboard and footboard in natural wood that matched the other furnishings in Tony’s master bedroom suite.

The results were meaningful on every level. Transfers from bed to standing and to his wheelchair became significantly easier with the hi-low function. The extended mattress accommodated Tony’s full height. And the family could now lie beside Tony to watch television, read to him, or simply share human touch — something the old institutional bed had made nearly impossible.

Tony is home.

Pro Tip: When selecting a home hospital bed, always measure the user’s height against the available mattress lengths before ordering. Standard hospital bed mattresses are 80 inches; extended-length options are available and matter significantly for taller individuals. Pressure at the foot of the bed due to a short mattress is a preventable problem.
